In the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People has been given new powers to investigate complaints from individual children and young people. These new powers are likely to come into force in April 2016.
In preparation for this, the Commissioner’s office undertook a mapping exercise exploring the various complaints-handling bodies and regulators in Scotland to assess if and how they take complaints and concerns from children and young people. As part of this mapping process Children’s Parliament was commissioned to speak with children to gather their views on the theme of complaints and the subsequent report highlights their views and ideas.
This evidence from children and young people will be used by the Commissioner’s office to demonstrate how current practice can be developed to improve children’s ability to complain.
This will be the start of ongoing work to develop systems and services in preparation for this new power vested in the Commissioner. It is important that the realisation of this new power is informed by children and young people so that the process works for them.
