On the 6th June 2023, seven Members of Children’s Parliament (MCPs) took part in their annual takeover of the Scottish Cabinet alongside Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs). In this meeting, the MCPs spoke directly to the First Minister and Ministers in the Cabinet on key issues which are important to children across Scotland.
I am excited to get a chance to talk about children’s rights

This yearly event is considered to be the only one of its kind in the world. And, excitingly, after recent Cabinet Takeovers taking place online due to the pandemic, this year’s event was in person at St. Andrew’s House in Edinburgh.
The MCPs who took part in the Cabinet travelled from the Western Isles, Aberdeen and Clackmannanshire to take part in the event alongside attending a two-night residential in Edinburgh.
To arrive at their Calls to Action, MCPs took part in discussions, workshops and a national survey of MCPs to find out the important issues facing children in Scotland today. After lots of work, the children agreed their key issues for Cabinet 2023 as ‘Cost of Living’ and ‘How we learn’. The children also shared their hopes for UNCRC Incorporation into Scots Law.
