“Fairness and inclusivity within the digital environment is a topic that has been raised on the Dignity in School project. Now in its second year, the project works with partners to build the capacity of primary schools to take aโฏchildrenโsโฏrights-based approach and become hubs of human rights practice. In the first year,ย the project involved schools in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In my role as the Digital Media Officer, Iย got to involve children with the digital development of the Dignity in School Hub, a tool to share resources from the project. I worked with a group of children from both schools, we called this group โThe Dignity Design Panelโ, to build the โmyDignityโ section of the Hub. Within this process,ย the group were keen to discuss how digital technology is involved with their rights in school and how to stay safe and calm while learning online.ย I framed this process with emphasis on how we wanted to share key ideas from their experience with the project- how do we include children around Scotland in this process? We had fruitful discussions around the action of sharing online: Where is all this information stored? Who is our audience? What is useful to share?ย The panel discussed how the digital environment can affect their dignity in school in both positive and negative ways. In Aberdeen, the group explored this in the context of what aย calm school looks like. The focus of this was knowing when to step away from the digital environment. The group used resources from the Mind Yer Time project to create the โCalm Zoneโ: a digital space full of top tips to go in school if you feel worried, stressed or angry.ย
As we move into Year Two, there will be more investigations into dignity and digital safety in school, so keep checking the Dignity in School Hub!”
